Wealth Planning for Professionals

Doctors, dentists, architects, CPAs, attorneys, mental health professionals — the clients on this page have something in common: they’ve spent years, often decades, becoming expert at what they do. They understand better than most what real expertise looks like. And they want to work with an advisor who brings the same standards to their financial lives that they bring to their patients and clients.

The professional's paradox

There's a pattern we see with high-achieving professionals: meticulous in their work, often less so with their own finances. Not out of carelessness — out of focus. When you're running a practice, serving patients or clients, managing staff, and trying to have something resembling a life outside of work, your own financial picture tends to get deferred, pushed-off, paused... Indefinitely. The result is usually a version of the same thing: great income, inconsistent savings habits, a retirement plan that hasn't been reviewed in years, insurance coverage that hasn't kept pace with income or assets, and a vague sense that everything should probably be better organized than it probably is. We work to fix that — systematically, and with purpose, and often in the background.

Running your own practice

Many of our professional clients own their practices outright or have partners — which means they sit at the intersection of being a business owner and high-income professional. That combination creates specific planning opportunities that employed professionals don't have access to. A well-structured retirement plan — typically a 401(k) combined with a Cash Balance or Defined Benefit pension — can allow practice owners to shelter significantly more income from taxes each year than most realize. For a physician, dentist, architect, or CPA in California paying combined federal and state marginal rates well above 50 cents on the dollar, the after-tax value of maximizing these contributions is very meaningful. We coordinate and manage these plans, and with a view towards multi-year and even multi-decade tax planning, retirement and legacy decisions. Beyond retirement plans, we handle the full scope of personal financial planning alongside the practice — investment management, tax strategy, insurance, cash flow, and estate planning — coordinated in an integrated whole that brings confidence and peace of mind.

Insurance that actually fits

High-income professionals are frequently underinsured and exposed to risks they may not have fully contemplated. Common gaps we find include: Disability income. Your income is your most valuable asset — for a physician, dentist or CPA in their 40s, the future earning capacity is a big number. Own-occupation disability coverage protects that specifically. Group coverage through an employer or professional association is rarely sufficient on its own, and often doesn't follow you if your situation changes. Life insurance. Employer-provided group coverage is almost never adequate for a high earner with dependents and a mortgage. We review coverage against actual income replacement needs and debt obligations — not rules of thumb or vague round numbers. Liability and umbrella. Professionals with significant assets and high public profiles need liability coverage that reflects the real risk of litigation and how it could impact creditor-accessible net worth. We review coverage limits across auto, home, and umbrella to make sure there are no gaps that could prove costly, as well as suggest potential asset protection strategies for further exploration.

What working together looks like

We handle the financial details around your schedule — not the other way around. Our professional clients are busy, exacting people who want a plan that works, a process that doesn't consume their time, and an advisor they can trust to stay on top of things. We work closely with your CPA, your attorney, and any other professionals involved in your financial life. Every recommendation we make is made as a fiduciary — which means your interests come first, without exception.
